If you've never visited Bamburgh, you really should try and make the effort - it truly is a beautiful place. The town itself is dominated by its incredible Norman castle that squats on a dolerite outcrop. This must be one of the largest inhabited homes in England: it's vast! It has appeared in so many films and TV programmes that it is instantly recognisable on first sight. We stayed at the Victoria Hotel, which was fabulous value for money and had an excellent restaurant.
From Bamburgh Beach, Lindisfarne Castle is visible to the north, looking a bit like a Northumbrian Mont St Michel, while to the south lies Seahouses, from where the Farne Islands trip boats sail.
South of Seahouses lies Druridge Bay, with the town of Amble at its northern end, From here you can take a boat trip to visit - but not land on - Coquet Island. We decided to save our money and look for Roseate Terns from the beach at Hauxley: our views were probably as good as you'd get from the boat!
